I’m doing some research into small/mid trucks for a family member. He sort of wants a Tacoma TRD pro or ZR2 Colorado. He was asking about the 2.8 Duramax since GM is so keen to hide their details about this mystical engine.
It turns out it’s the VM R428.... Things I now know:
This engine came in this in Europe in 2001:
....and is now in this:
Now I’m not bagging on this engine, or the use of old tech, even if it is updated and improved, this is hard to swallow. I still like the idea of a 2.8 Diesel ZR2 Colorado, and I am not even a fan of GM.
I think I’d go for a Tacoma, or recommend the gas Colorado.

if you won’t bag the engine, i will
the 2.8TD is bad.
initially started using 5W-30 oil, due to a manufacturing problem (using too much oil) now use 5W-40
oil cooler leaks, cylinder heads carboning up, chipped teeth on balance shafts, oil leaks from rocker cover, coolant leaks from plugs in cylinder head, intercooler hoses blowing off
i’ve lost count how many we have replaced under warranty, had some towed in seized up when they ran out of oil
avoid like the plague. go for a new Ranger from Ford when they come out.

It’s actually the VM A428 (which essentially is the same thing just CRD) I’ve heard not so great things about the longevity of the motor from UK forums and other forums over there. What pisses me off about the Ranger is that we aren’t getting the sweet I5 diesel from Australia either, its probably going to be the same diesel that JLR uses.

I didn’t want to bag on it, but I didn’t mean I thought it was a good engine.
My sister bought an Eco-Diesel Ram. She’s had a new engine under warranty due to damage resulting from a coolant sensor failure. I took that with a grain of salt because I’m realistic and like to see more before forming an opinion, but I haven’t seen anything good about VM engines, just pictures of broken rockers etc.. VM motors seem like a bad move even for a lease period truck.
I guess the gas version of this truck would be the only choice if he wants a Colorado, It will take a LOT of effort to get him to buy a Tacoma, he’s more likely to just buy the cheapest 4x4 Silverado if this scares him too much. If it was my money I’d go with the TRD Taco, maybe add a front locker and some better tires.
I don’t know about the Isuzu Diesels offered elsewhere, but I could imagine they must have had some serious issue if GM is not using an Isuzu powerplant, and had to go to FCA and VM for a diesel.

GM most likely didn’t use Isuzu motor as they more or less have no stake in Isuzu plus i doubt the 4JJ1 or any other Isuzu motor would be compliant for USA regs

Yeah, what I was thinking. 4wd Action Australia made the Isuzu D-Max seem like a good capable truck, was hoping we got something similar, but I knew it wasn’t likely.

I believe they still have a 12% stake in Isuzu. But, I believe you are 100% correct about the 4JJ1 not meeting EPA 2018 regs.

I think GM’s not using Isuzu engines only because they can’t—from what I’ve heard their 3.0 4-pot turbodiesel is unkillable.

I want that diesel minivan.....I bet it can tow as much (if not more) as the tiny pickup.

Is waiting for the Ranger an option? It would be a 3rd truck to cross-shop.

The 2.8 duramax diesel engine is a great engine. I’ve had 2 versions of it. 17 Colorado and now the 18 z2 Colorado. I love it. Great power and torque. Not to mention the great gas mileage.

12% was the most recent I could find. It may be 3% now.

The 2.8LWN engine is built in Thailand and GM owned VM at the time the engine was designed and engineered, the VM motor was built in South America. Yes the blue prints are the same but there are changes and the engines dont roll off the same line. The GM plant making the 2.8 wasn’t even open in 2001. So research a little deeper next time. I get 34mpg and 420ft/lb of torque out of my Canyon and have for 36,000 trouble free miles. It’s a great engine.

There are a couple of co workers that drive thier own Colorado 4x4 diesels. They haul all there construction tools all over southern California which is heavy. On most weekends I go off roading with them. Im in my Jeep Cherokee 4x4. From Glamis dunes, to mountains, desert. You name were driving on it. Anyhoo they drive those trucks very hard and fast . No problems with either one of those engines or trucks.

MEANWHILE the equally Isuzu-built 3.0L DMAX V6 of Opel Vectra, Saab 9-5 and Renaul VelSatis fame commonly suffers fuel pump failure and thermic problems. Which is a shame because I would totally rock a Saab 9-5 V6 manual diesel Wagon.

Must be those extra two cylinders—they’re a doozy. Besides, a 9-5 should be had with a turbopetrol four like a proper Saab.

I think it’d be awesome in something significantly lighter.
